Paper Round: Zidane exit delays Mane move, Sane exclusion explained

Sadio Mane had been set to join Real Madrid before Zinedine Zidane departed, and could still move to the Bernabeu this summer. That and more in Tuesday’s Paper Round.

Zidane exit delays Mane move

Sadio Mane was set to sign for Real Madrid before Zinedine Zidane quit as manager, France Football reports – via the Daily Mirror. The Senegal forward was poised to become the European champions' first signing of the summer, having been lined up by club president Florentino Perez, but Zidane’s shock departure has stalled the move – which may yet go ahead once a new manager is at the helm. France Football claim personal terms had been agreed, with Real just needing to agree a fee with Liverpool.

Paper Round’s view: A rumour we did not expect to see today. After seeing the usual names banded around, it was a surprise to see Mane linked with Real. So does that make it more ridiculous, or suggest there’s an element of truth to the report? For now, it’s pure speculation, but if it really is Perez who’s pursuing the forward, there’s every chance it could to fruition regardless of who the new Real manager is.

In-Sane, Out-Sane

From Sadio Mane, to Leroy Sane. The Manchester City forward was omitted from Germany’s 23-man squad by Joachim Low on Monday, with The Sun reporting that his national team-mates were stunned by his “big-time attitude”. The 22-year-old, named PFA Young Player of the Year after helping City to the Premier League title, had been in the provisional squad, but his behaviour around the camp, and performance against Austria on the weekend contributed to his exclusion.

Paper Round’s view: Perhaps it’s our biased view having predominantly watched the Premier League this season, but Sane’s omission is mystifying. If it was for the sake of team morale, then it’s a mightily brave decision by Low, but he will have some answering to do when, if at all, Germany find themselves seeking a Plan B in attack.

Sokratis snubs Utd for Arsenal

Borussia Dortmund defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos is set to become Unai Emery’s first Arsenal signing, the Mirror reports, after his father confirmed he snubbed a move to Manchester United. The Greek centre back will cost Arsenal £16m, while he is expected to sign a three-year contract at the Emirates, with an option of a further year, after he undergoes a medical on Tuesday – as confirmed by the player’s father Charalambos, on a Greek radio station.

Paper Round’s view: Sven Mislintat, Arsenal’s head of recruitment, looks set to continue his move for Dortmund players. Mislintat was influential in bringing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Sokratis to the German club in the summer of 2013 – we could well be a day away from the trio being reunited at Arsenal.

Fellaini next?

Could Marouane Fellaini become Arsenal’s second signing of the summer behind Sokratis? Numerous papers have reported the Manchester United midfielder could be set for a shock move to the Gunners, having rejected two contract offers to stay at Old Trafford. The Telegraph claim Emery was interested in bringing Fellaini while managing PSG, and the Belgian is now an attractive prospect given that he will cost the club nothing.

Paper Round’s view: Even for free, it’s hard to see Arsenal fans reacting well to this deal. Fellaini arrived at United when David Moyes was looking to make his stamp on Sir Alex Ferguson’s title-winning side, it would hardly be an inspiring way for Emery to open the post-Wenger era.
