Ronaldo set for Juventus switch

Serie A champions Juventus are now confident of signing Cristiano Ronaldo from Real Madrid. The 33-year-old Portuguese international has a one billion euro release clause but may be released for just 100 million euros, around £88m. He would receive a salary of £26m a year, something that would take him up to 37 years of age. Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain may also be interested.

Paper Round’s view: Given his superb levels of fitness, Ronaldo may well prove a bargain even at this age, and for this fee. He is a brilliant central forward, and would be able to give his side around 30 goals a season, or perhaps even more. His professionalism would help set standards for youngsters at whichever club he joins, but it might be a simple way for Juventus to finally find European success after years of missing out.

Arsenal face battle for N’Zonzi

Juventus might not stop at signing Ronaldo, as they eye up France midfielder Steven N’Zonzi. The 29-year-old Sevilla midfielder agreed a contract extension with his club in February, but the deal inserted a £35m release clause in at the same time. New Arsenal boss Unai Emery, who managed the midfielder in Spain, has sounded him out about a return to the Premier League, and he is keen on coming back to England,

Paper Round’s view: Emery seems to be smart enough to work within his limited budget. Stephan Lichtsteiner came on a free to add experience, and Bernd Leno should hold down the goalkeeping spot. Juventus can offer N’Zonzi Champions League football, something that he may prefer after finally cracking into the national side, but he is familiar with Emery and can probably earn more in England.

Manchester City set for double swoop

For what seems like the 100th time this summer, Manchester City are reportedly set to sign Napoli midfielder Jorginho. The 26-year-old Italy international will join for £48.7m, a substantial reduction on the fee of £61m had initially valued the player at. He will be joined by Riyad Mahrez, with the 27-year-old international costing £60m, also a reduced fee, from Leicester’s valuation of £80m in the winter transfer window.

Paper Round’s view: Jorginho should be a more than adequate replacement for Yaya Toure, who has left the club on a free transfer. There is enough strength in the City squad that he can be introduced to the Premier League gradually to make sure he settles in comfortably, but missing the World Cup might mean that he is asked to play in the early stages as his teammates recover. Mahrez also misses the World Cup, and with his Premier League experience he may also be able to help City hit the ground running.

Emery targets another midfielder

While Unai Emery is reported above as being interested in Steven N’Zonzi, he is looking to add more players to his squad. He is prepared to raise money through player sales to bring in Andre Gomes from Barcelona. The 24-year-old is available for £30m, and there remains a deal in progress for Sampdoria midfielder Lucas Torreira.

Paper Round’s view: After the arrival for Sokratis Papastathopoulos for just £16m from Borussia Dortmund, Emery is probably coming up against the buffers of his transfer budget. There is plenty of deadwood for Emery to cut adrift if he wants to raise funds, but the departure of Santi Cazorla and Jack Wilshere will have already reduced his wage allocation.
