Manchester United face battle for Willian

Manchester United may miss out on longstanding target, Willian. The Chelsea player is one of Jose Mourinho’s favourite players and he is a target for them in this transfer window. However, they face competition for the player from Barcelona. Barcelona want to bring in Willian from Stamford Bridge to give more freedom to Lionel Messi, and to give them more tactical options. United may not win in a bidding war.

Paper Round’s view: Willian would offer similar direct play as Antoine Griezmann would have had he left Atletico Madrid. It is not a like-for-like replacement, but he offers pace through the middle or on the right flank. His discipline also means he can be relied upon to offer defensive cover and give Lionel Messi freedom to attack as he sees fit.

Wilshere set for West Ham move

Jack Wilshere was set for a move from Arsenal to Turkish club Fenerbahce, according to recent rumours. His contract at Arsenal is up meaning that he can be signed on a free transfer by any club in the world, but he now seems set to stay in London. He is due to sign a three year deal with West Ham for £100,000 a week after revealing that his family are all fans of the East End club.

Paper Round’s view: Wilshere should provide experience and creativity in the middle of the pitch. If he can keep his fitness, then he also offers bite in the midfield as he is not afraid of the physical side of the game, either. Three years could be enough for Wilshere to prove his worth before moving back up the table to another club, as his talent is beyond question.

Liverpool face off with Spurs for Grealish

Tottenham Hotspur are favourites for the signing of Aston Villa playmaker Jack Grealish. The 22 year old’s asking price had been £40m, but the financial crisis at Villa Park has brought that down to around half that. Spurs have bid £15m for the player, and Villa were hoping that Liverpool’s interested would spark a bidding war, but Jurgen Klopp has yet to respond with a bid of any kind.

Paper Round’s view: £40m for Grealish is, even today, a ridiculous asking price. There is plenty of potential in his displays, but he has proven nothing in the Premier League, and the demands of The Championship are completely different. If either Liverpool or Spurs can get hold of him for £20m then that is a risk worth taking, with plenty of other attacking options in their squad already.

United scouting Haaland

Manchester United are scouting 17-year-old Molde striker, Erling Haaland. He has impressed with Molde since breaking into the first team. One thing to note is that Haaland’s father is former Manchester City midfielder, Alfie Inge Haaland, who’s career barely recovered after Roy Keane’s brutal red-card challenge on him when Keane was at Manchester United.

Paper Round’s view: Given Keane has nothing to do with United’s current set-up, it would probably be easier for Haaland Sr to allow his son to join Manchester United, assuming he has any say in the matter. However, the older Haaland is deeply unpopular with United fans to this day, which might make it difficult for the teenage version should he ever break through into the first team.
