Liverpool eye Shaqiri transfer

Liverpool have opened talks with Championship side Stoke City over the transfer of Xherdan Shaqiri. Shaqiri is back from the World Cup after Sweden knocked the 26-year-old Switzerland international’s team out of the competition. The release clause had been rumoured to be £12m, but the fee may be around a million pounds more. Jurgen Klopp would add him to the already signed Naby Keita and Fabinho in midfield.

Paper Round’s view: Liverpool are clearly making plans to improve their midfield to support their excellent striking options, and Shaqiri should fit in well. He may not play every game, but he can play across the middle three, and also occupy roles on either side of the striker higher up the pitch. At just £13m he is barely any risk at all, and has enough skill to earn a regular first-team role.

Klopp also wants Grzegorz Krychowiak

Klopp is not stopping at Shaqiri for midfield reinforcements, according to a report in The Sun. The paper claims that Krychowiak, who played for West Brom on loan last season from Paris Saint-Germain, is another target. The 28-year-old Poland international might still be wanted by new coach Thomas Tuchel, but he will be keen to leave if he isn’t offered regular football.

Paper Round’s view: Krychowiak is a talented player, and had been linked with a move to big Premier League sides before he left Sevilla to join PSG. PSG might be willing to accept a cut-price fee, too. Not only do they have a player who is currently outside of first-team plans, but they are also in need of raising cash to meet Financial Fair Play rules with the signing of Neymar to be accounted for, and also the permanent switch of Kylian Mbappe from Monaco.

Luiz set for Chelsea exit

Chelsea fan favourite David Luiz could be on his way out of the club. The 31-year-old Brazil international missed the World Cup, and has fallen out of favour at Stamford Bridge under Antonio Conte. Though Conte is due to leave, Carlo Ancelotti wants to bring him to Napoli, who still have Maurizio Sarri - probably Chelsea’s new boss - on the books. Negotiations hinge on Luiz’s final contract year, which earns him £120,000 a week.

Paper Round’s view: At 31, Luiz has one or two more years at the top before he will likely head to the US, China, or back to Brazil to finish his career. While Napoli have fallen behind Juventus following the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo, they offer the chance of Champions League football, and at a slower pace Luiz’s weaknesses will be less exposed in the domestic league. Chelsea have moved on already without him and will want his wages off the books.

Maguire to be offered new Leicester deal

Harry Maguire has been one of England’s best performers at the World Cup, which has unsurprisingly attracted interest from other clubs. The Leicester City central defender will be offered a new deal by the club to make the 25-year-old player the best-paid player, to match Jamie Vardy’s wages. Leicester want to keep their best players after the departure of Riyad Mahrez.

Paper Round’s view: Maguire has earned a new deal, with his calmness on the pitch for England, as well as his runs from deep from the defence, impressing alongside the patchy Kyle Walker and John Stones. While there are doubts about his mobility, those seem to have been set aside by playing three at the back to give him cover on either side. At just 25, he has the potential to make the step up soon, so any new deal offer may be moot.
