United close in on £60m Alderweireld

In a United-heavy Paper Round, Toby Alderweireld leads the way. Manchester United expect to sign Tottenham Hotspur’s 29-year-old central defender in the coming days. Spurs had wanted £75m for the Belgian international, but United offered just £50m in May. It had seemed there would be no deal but now it seems £60m could be enough to get the deal to go through, especially as Alderweireld can leave for £25m next season.

Paper Round’s view: United desperately need a new defender to provide experience and leadership for their current youngsters, Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof. While £75m is a huge sum, £60m seems reasonable when taking into account Alderweireld’s age and the amount Liverpool paid Southampton for Virgil van Dijk. United just have to hope Daniel Levy won’t change the deal at the last minute.

Pogba could leave for Barcelona

There’s a chance of a dramatic change to United as Mino Raiola is expected to tell the club that he can broker a £100m deal for the midfielder to Barcelona. Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain are also interested in the 25-year-old French World Cup winner, but PSG have Marco Verratti, a Raiola client and a player who has interested United in the past, allowing for a potential swap deal. Barcelona could offer Yerry Mina.

Paper Round’s view: Barcelona’s new stadium sponsorship could allow them to find the cash for a deal on Pogba, but it is difficult to see the celebrity-obsessed Ed Woodward allow the player to leave without having an equally prominent replacement lined up - that is not Verratti, as talented as he is. While the swap with PSG would make sense, Mina would be of no use if they are able to sign Alderweireld.

Benfica target Darmian

Matteo Darmian is another player who could be on his way out of Old Trafford. Juventus have been linked with the Italian international, and the 28-year-old is also interesting Napoli. However, the club showing interest currently is Benfica. The Portuguese side are rebuilding as they chase Porto, and want to take Darmian on loan, though wages could provide a stumbling block.

Paper Round’s view: Given Darmian’s wages aren’t holding United back, and as other players look likely to leave, it doesn’t seem as if United need to get rid of Darmian on loan. Jose Mourinho has praised him this summer, suggesting he has no wish to freeze him out of the first team. It appears likely only a permanent deal would be of interest to United.

Chelsea consider Ramsey bid

Arsenal are prepared to sell Aaron Ramsey. The 27-year-old Welsh international has just one year left on his current contract, and can leave on a free transfer at the end of the season. As a result, they will sell him for a sufficient transfer fee, with the story mentioning a fee of £35m. Chelsea are interested as Maurizio Sarri accepts Jack Grealish will move to Tottenham Hotspur.

Paper Round’s view: After a disappointing season last year, signing Ramsey would be an enjoyable way for Chelsea’s fans to reassert their dominance over Arsenal. At a cut-price £35m, Ramsey is value for money, but it is not clear if he has the technical talent to improve from what he is now - a promising but inconsistent midfield talent.
