United frustrated in Maguire chase

Leicester City are bringing in two new central defenders, but Manchester United should not get their hopes up over signing Harry Maguire. The England international has been linked with a £75m move to Old Trafford since his impressive showing in the World Cup, but Leicester are not buying Caglar Soyuncu, 22, and Filip Benkovic, 21, to make way for Maguire to leave. Instead they are signing the two players for the future.

Paper Round’s view: Leicester have a decent track record in identifying young talent that goes on to flourish in the Premier League, and also for generally being able to spot a bargain. However, it is hard to believe that they would add two young central defenders if they weren’t able to offer regular first team football to at least one of them. It does seem as if they are preparing to lose Maguire to some degree.

United battle Everton for Zouma

Manchester United are hedging their bets as they try to bring in at least one defender before the transfer window closes. Everton are their rivals for Chelsea defender Kurt Zouma. The 23-year-old is the subject of a loan offer from Everton, and United have made contact to discuss a permanent transfer. Chelsea are reluctant to countenance letting Zouma go to a rival.

Paper Round’s view: Zouma suffered a serious knee injury a couple of years ago but his loan deal to Stoke last season allowed him to at least prove his fitness. Zouma is a rare thing, a young player who gained the trust of Mourinho and who has, or had, the potential to be an excellent defender for the long-term. It is natural that Chelsea are reluctant to let him go but they have a bloated squad to cut down.

Leicester consider Drinkwater return

Another potential Chelsea departure could be former Leicester City midfielder Danny Drinkwater. The 28-year-old England international could move back to his former club. Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic’s arrivals have edged him out of the frame for regular football, and Rubens Loftus-Cheek will stay at Stamford Bridge this season. Tiemoue Bakayoko could also leave, with AC Milan interested.

Paper Round’s view: Drinkwater should move if he is not the player that Maurizio Sarri wants, because even if Jorginho struggles in his first season, there are now two other players ahead of him in the pecking order. It is a shame that Bakayoko is getting just one season after he showed his talents at Monaco, and Milan could be getting something of a bargain should they sign him.

Arsenal consider late Vida move

Besiktas defender Domagoj Vida could be another signing for Arsenal this transfer window, but the London club are raising funds for the deal first. David Ospina and Danny Welbeck were offered in part exchange for the 29-year-old Croatian defender, but Besiktas want a straight cash deal worth almost £27m. Another player who could leave is Lucas Perez, wanted by West Ham for £5m.

Paper Round’s view: Vida showed some impressive mettle and plenty of aggression for Croatia during the World Cup. If he could bring that form into the Premier League then Arsenal would have a useful central defender to add steel and experience to their defence. In terms of Welbeck, it appears that his inability to improve from his younger days has been compounded by his serious knee problems, and his career is starting to stutter.
