Jorginho scored on his debut as Chelsea won their opening game of the season 3-0 at Huddersfield as the Maurizio Sarri era started in impressive fashion.

An unlikely goalscorer, N'Golo Kante opened the scoring after 34 minutes with the Blues' first shot on target. In a ruthless display of finishing Chelsea also netted with their second effort, new boy Jorginho coolly converting a penalty on the stroke of half-time after Marcos Alonso was felled inside the box.

Steve Mounie was agonisingly denied by the crossbar as Huddersfield created their fair share of opportunities in the first-half, but the Terriers lacked quality and a bit of fortune in the final third. Ultimately, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Chelsea's new £72m goalkeeper, had little to do.

The two-goal deficit deflated the hosts and the Blues took complete control after the restart, further extending their lead through Pedro as Sarri recorded a convincing victory in his first league game.

TALKING POINT

Sarri's half-time talk proves effective: There was some cause for concern after Chelsea's first-half performance. The Blues were slow, laboured and the two-goal lead flattered them. Sarri was animated on the touchline, ordering his men to play at a quicker tempo. The football didn't improve until the Italian delivered his team-talk, though - and they performed like a new team after the restart. Their play was much more fluid; they adopted the style of football Sarri likes his teams to play. On the second-half performance alone, Chelsea will be a lot of fun to watch this season.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Willian (Chelsea): Produced a driving performance, creating the first goal with his explosive pace and trickery. Was a menace throughout until he was replaced with 15 minutes to play.

PLAYER RATINGS

Huddersfield: Hamer 7, Hadergjonaj 7, Schindler 6, Zanka 5, Kongolo 5, Mooy 5, Hogg 6, Billing 6, Pritchard 6, Lowe 5, Mounie 6. Subs: Diakhaby 5, Depoitre 6.

Chelsea: Kepa 6, Azpilicueta 6, Rudiger 6, Luiz 7, Alonso7, Jorginho 8, Kante 7, Barkley 6, Pedro 7, Morata 6, Willian 8. Subs: Loftus-Cheek 6, Moses 5, Hazard 7.

KEY MOMENTS

34' - GOAL! Huddersfield 0-1 Chelsea: It's a scruffy goal but Chelsea and Sarri won't care - they are off and running under their new boss. The Blues work it wide to Willian, he creates space for a cross with a couple of step-overs, finding Kante who slices his effort into the corner of the net.

38' - OFF THE WOODWORK! Kepa beaten but Chelsea survive! Huddersfield deliver a corner, it's flicked on to Mounie whose header smacks off the inside of the upright and bounces to safety. Desperately unfortunate.

44' - PENALTY TO CHELSEA! Alonso is caught by Schlinder inside the box and the referee points to the spot! The Huddersfield defender is also booked.

45' - GOAL! Huddersfield 0-2 Chelsea: Two shots on target, two goals from Chelsea. Jorginho with a slow, nonchalant run-up, strokes the ball down the middle and Hamer doesn't get close to it.

58' - CROSSBAR! Chelsea go close from a corner once more. This time Rudiger flicks on the delivery to set up Alonso but his acrobatic effort smashes against the woodwork. That would have been something.

80' - GOAL! Huddersfield 0-3 Chelsea: A classic goal on the counter-attack from the Blues. Executed by Hazard, finished by Pedro. Depoitre heads straight at Kepa, the Chelsea goalkeeper throws the ball back into play. Hazard drives forward, slipping through Pedro at the perfect moment. The Spaniard applies the finish, lifting the ball over Hamer.

KEY STATS

  • Jorginho is just the eighth player to score a penalty on his Premier League debut, after Brian Deane, Alan Thompson, Fabrizio Ravanelli, Peter Kennedy, Adam Le Fondre, Roberto Soldado and Alexandre Pato.
  • N'Golo Kante's opener for Chelsea was his first goal in the Premier League since September 2017, and just his fourth in 107 appearances in the competition overall.
  • Huddersfield's most recent league win against Chelsea was in a Division Two game at Stamford Bridge in March 1963.
